In his new book, Police Brutality Matters, Black former New York City police officer Joe Ested advocates that all police crimes be handled by federal prosecutors, not local district attorneys. Ested said policing in the US was shaped by slavery. Most white cops patrol Black areas with the attitude: “I came here to kick ass, take names and lock people up.”
